The paper discusses the phrase ἐμῆς τιμήορος εὐνῆς, occurring in Nonn. Dion. VIII 70. In recent times, philologists have suggested that the passage must be emended, or have offered interpretations that diverge from the normal usage of εὐνή in Greek poetry. The phrase can be understood only if one detects the allusion to a passage in Book 5 that mentions a rare myth involving the incestuous love of Zeus for Aphrodite.

Abstract

The paper discusses the phrase ἐμῆς τιμήορος εὐνῆς, occurring in Nonn. Dion. VIII 70. In recent times, philologists have suggested that the passage must be emended, or have offered interpretations that diverge from the normal usage of εὐνή in Greek poetry. The phrase can be understood only if one detects the allusion to a passage in Book 5 that mentions a rare myth involving the incestuous love of Zeus for Aphrodite.
