This paper is devoted to an epigraphic dossier from the Antonine age concerning the use of the resources of the Cretan sanctuary of the goddess Dictynna by imperial authority. The dossier consists of three milestones from the Hadrianic age, an inscription now attributable to Antoninus Pius, and a dedication to Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. In addition to providing some detailed considerations on these texts, the article intends to reflect on the relations between central authority and provincial communities regarding the use of temple goods. A use that is not necessarily an expression of a wear and tear on municipal autonomies, but can be interpreted as a positive response of imperial power to the demands of the cities themselves.

Abstract
This paper is devoted to an epigraphic dossier from the Antonine age concerning the use of the resources of the Cretan sanctuary of the goddess Dictynna by imperial authority. The dossier consists of three milestones from the Hadrianic age, an inscription now attributable to Antoninus Pius, and a dedication to Marcus Aurelius and Lucius Verus. In addition to providing some detailed considerations on these texts, the article intends to reflect on the relations between central authority and provincial communities regarding the use of temple goods. A use that is not necessarily an expression of a wear and tear on municipal autonomies, but can be interpreted as a positive response of imperial power to the demands of the cities themselves.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
