The essay aims to analize the Rime spirituali of Lucia Colao, dedicated to Francesco de’ Medici and Bianca Cappello, and conserved in two working manuscript at the Biblioteca Comunale in Treviso (ms. 3125) and at the Biblioteca Civica of Vittorio Veneto (ms. 683). Colao’s lyric collection represents the rare case of the contribution by a female author to the experience of the religious poetic rewriting initiated in the 1530s by Girolamo Malipiero’ Petrarcha spirituale and Giacomo Salvatorino’s Thesoro de sacra scriptura sopra le rime di Petrarcha, and continued in her own age by writers such as Crisippo Selva (Scelta delle rime del Tasso fatta spirituale) and Giulio Cornelio Graziani (Orlando santo). Colao’s religious contrafactum of Petrarch’s Rerum Vulgarium Fragmenta concerns a rewriting of 157 poems, which maintains the original meter and rhyme words but substitutes a new religious subject matter for the original’s profane themes, a new religious subject matter developed from a female point of view.
