Il 1914 di Roberto Longhi

Thanks to the rediscovery of the review of Arthur Moeller van den Bruck's book, Die italienische Schonheit (1913), which Roberto Longhi wrote at the end of 1913 and published in the journal 'La Voce' in January 1914, the article proposes an analysis of the scholar's production during that fundamental year. In particular, the reading and analysis of the review of the German volume shows how that book played an important role in accelerating Longhi's reflections on Piero della Francesca, Andrea del Castagno, Paolo Uccello and Domenico Veneziano. Longhi's analysis of these artists in his article Piero dei Franceschi e lo sviluppo della pittura veneziana, which was published in the journal `L'Arte' in that same year 1914, has precise parallels with the January 1914 review and points of contact with what Moeller van den Bruck wrote in his book in 1913. The review offers new insights in Longhi's activity in 1914, and reveals how his ideas on Piero della Francesca took shape thanks, also, to the volume he reviewed at the end of the 1913.
