The main aim of this article is to philosophically discuss the question of the individual in literature, in particular, in the works of Tolstoy. For this purpose, Tolstoy’s short story “Master and Man” and some other stories by Tolstoy will be analyzed in order to reveal the concept of the individual, and to perceive how the individual as a character of the story realizes him/ herself through the concepts of relationship and the fear of death. Another basic concern of the article is to expose the relationship of Hegel’s masterslave dialectic to Tolstoy’s individual in the short story. The article tries to demonstrate how in some ways Tolstoy is close to Hegel although he dislikes Hegel.
